S4S CCUS is one of the two large-scale projects funded by EPFL’s Solutions for Sustainability initiative, which aims to develop sustainable solutions to decrease our energy dependence and carbon emissions. The project is formally titled “Energy-efficient CCUS for Sustainable and Circular Economy” and was selected as one of the two large-scale S4S projects.

The project (2023–2029) is funded by EPFL through the Solutions4Sustainability program, with a total funding of CHF 9,000,000. This funding confirms EPFL’s strategic support for advancing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies within a circular and energy-efficient framework.

In addition, the project recently secured external funding through a BRIDGE Discovery grant (PIs: Agrawal and Subramanian, WP1), enabling the development of the R2R tool for continuous production of porous graphene membrane, with work officially starting in January 2025. Additional funds were also raised via the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (PIs: Stavropoulou and Laloui, WP3), to develop a unique large-scale geological CO2 sequestration (GCS) simulator.
